What Inspires Me

4 main things that inspire me to write.

February 17, 2014

I have this great friend I talk to almost every day–about our lives and our respective creative endeavors–and he’s been beta reading Martyrs for me as I rewrite it. Every chapter I finish I put on Google Docs for him to read, and he gives me some really great insight into the story. He also really enjoys it, which is a great ego boost for me! More than that, though, he also gets me thinking about a lot of other elements in writing outside of Martyrs, and the other day he asked me a really simple question: “What inspired you to write?” Surprisingly, I don’t think I’ve ever been asked that before. Maybe that isn’t much of a surprise–the truth is, I, like most other writers, was initially inspired by the works of others. I loved reading because I loved how authors could immerse me in their worlds. It’s a beautiful thing. There’s also the language element. I love the […]

Christmas Martyrs Exerpt

Merry Christmas from the Martyrs!

December 25, 2013

In the blogosphere, it’s pretty much bad-practice to post anything on holidays because most of your readers are going to be at home with their families, eating delicious food, telling hilarious stories, and probably getting irrationally angry with one another over silly trivialities that will go away in a few hours. Hey, what’s a holiday without a little contention? Since I decided to do a blog a day, I’m not going to skip my holidays, but I’m also not going to waste a lot of energy coming up with long, educational, or poignant posts. I have a family I’m spending time with today, too! Instead, I’ll give my readers a little gift–a scene from Martyrs. Happy Holidays, everyone! Spend a little time today to just be happy with where you are and who you’re with. Our world is a little too obsessed with what we don’t have and what we think we need to really appreciate the sheer beauty that […]

MusicAndMartyrs

Music and Martyrs.

December 23, 2013

I have a good friend going to school in Texas, in one of the best music programs in the country, and the other day she texted me to ask me a super unexpected, but super awesome question: would I mind if she wrote a series of music to my book Martyrs? Of course, as though there’d be any doubt, I said, “FUCK YES!” I believe all art is pretty interconnected, which is why I spend a lot of time drawing my characters, as well as writing them, and I have series of music that inspires me to think about my characters and my storyline. In fact, I have a ”Martyrs” playlist on my iPod full of songs that relate to my book. It’s kind of a problem. (A 70-song problem.) You can be sure that, if I could write music, I’d be writing my own custom pieces for my book, but since I can’t, I settle for picking out the […]

Brainstorm buddies.

December 10, 2013

You’ve probably heard the story behind The Martyr Series a few times in reading this blog, but if you haven’t, here’s the gist of things: I started writing the initial version of this book when I was fifteen. It started out as a single piece, but in writing it I quickly learned it was a multiple-book project. I extended the count to three, then to four, and finally, just over two years ago, I created the seven-book, 50,000-word outline that is The Martyr Series today. Now, as a preface to this story, I want to start out by saying this: the ideas within the Martyrs world are my own. I haven’t stolen concepts or characters–anything–in the course of developing this story. That being said, I didn’t develop it totally alone. We’re all familiar with what “brainstorming” is, and I happen to be a very good brainstormer. I enjoy helping other writers brainstorm through their own books–I love offering advice or […]

7 Facts about Martyrs’ Lead Badass

December 8, 2013

Remember that post I had about the one character who pretty much spurred the entire Martyr series? Well, today is her birthday! I don’t mean her birthday in that I literally came up with the character on December 8th. I mean it’s her birthday as in, in the book series, it’s her birthday. I’m not sure that it will ever actually come up in the course of the novel, but I know it, and so I’m going to celebrate it, god damn it! Because of that, I decided today’s blog post will be seven facts about this character (either in the book or in her creation) that you may not know! One: She started out in a Harry Potter fanfiction. That’s right. Thorn originally started off in a massive, multi-book fanfiction I started writing when I was thirteen. No, I don’t mean a fanfiction like 50 Shades of Disgusting. This fanfiction was essentially a redesign of the Harry Potter books […]
