Writer’s Block, Section One: What’s really behind it?

Have you ever buckled down to write and… had nothing? Have you ever been brainstorming ideas for a story and come up blank? Have you ever stared at that mocking, blinking cursor for hours, waiting for inspiration to strike? Congratulations. You have writer’s block. As writers, there comes the inevitable time when we just can’t write. Try as we might, we can’t seem to get the ideas to come out, and if we do, they come out all wrong and we hate everything about them so we just throw them away to try again. Time and time again, we can’t produce the right kind of work, if we’re producing any work at all. Writer’s block is like the erectile dysfunction of storytellers. It’s the inability to perform, no matter how hard we may want to or how sexy our story may be. (Jesus, I just compared writer’s block to erectile dysfunction. That’s probably not cool.)
